The Committee of One Hundred Provides Funding to Winter Garden Fire Rescue
Will Help Purchase Equipment to Prevent Cancer Related Illnesses
ORLANDO, Fla. (May 6, 2024) — Recently, The Committee of One Hundred presented the city of Winter Garden and Winter Garden Fire Rescue with a donation of $37,000 to purchase a Solo Rescue Decontamination Washer, which will assist in cleaning the firefighters’ self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other personal protective equipment (PPE) such as our helmets, boots, and gloves.
In recent years, cancer has become the leading cause of death among firefighters, and as a result the department has adopted a proactive approach to protecting personnel. Efforts include purchasing a second set of gear and limiting exposure by separating living quarters from the areas they take off their gear. Through a recent internal assessment, the Winter Garden Fire Department identified a vulnerability in their ability to properly clean their PPE because it was being done manually. The Solo Rescue Decontamination Washer is the most effective method of cleaning contaminated PPE while minimizing respiratory and dermal exposure to hazardous chemicals and carcinogens.
“We firmly believe that with the Committee of One Hundred's support, the Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department can acquire the Solo Rescue Decontamination Washer, resulting in long-term benefits, including the reduction of cancer-related illnesses and overall improved health and wellbeing of our firefighters and community,” said Shawn Kelly, Deputy Fire Chief, Winter Garden.
